Charlton is a delightful part of south-east London, located between Greenwich and Woolwich. Its appeal comes from a mix of lovely old buildings, scenic parks and a charming village centre. At the heart of the village are a war memorial, horse trough and drinking fountain, all situated on a traffic island. It's surrounded by a number of fascinating places. St Luke's Church, in part, survives from the 1630s, and it's the burial place of Spencer Perceval, Britain's only assassinated Prime Minister. Charlton House, nearby, is an exceptional Grade I-listed Jacobean manor house, with many original interior features. It now hosts community events, parties and conferences, and its grounds, incorporating Charlton's old village green, contain a summer house and an ancient mulberry tree, reputedly the oldest in Britain. This is the setting for the annual Horn Fair, reviving a historic tradition so raucous that it was banned in the 1800s. Other notable buildings include cottages dating back to the 1700s, the red-brick Assembly Rooms (1881) and an array of converted Victorian shops in the main village street. Football fans might like to visit The Valley, home to Charlton Athletic FC, while the Thames Barrier in Woolwich is a popular attraction.
