"Very nice pub with nice staff. Great location. I am so happy to see a non-smoking pub! - It's about time. I'll definitely be coming back!

Blackfriars is named after a 13th Century Dominican priory which was sited near the north bank of the Thames. Located in the south-west corner of the City of London, this is a particularly inspiring district since it introduces the visitor to both historic sights and contemporary attractions. Blackfriars is overlooked by the unmistakeable dome of St Paul's Cathedral. The wedge-shaped Black Friar pub, built in 1875, remains a monument to the area's history, with a statue of a jolly friar standing above the doorway and the jaw-dropping interior decor (of marble, mosaics and brass) depicting scenes from priory life. Blackfriars looks across the river to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern. Blackfriars Bridge was opened in 1869 by Queen Victoria, who is commemorated on the north side by a statue. Another statue, nearby, is Temperance - the figure of a girl pouring from a pitcher, at the top of a fountain. Blackfriars Bridge became notorious in 1982 when an Italian banker was found hanging below it. The bridge carries traffic and pedestrians over the Thames and from here, there's a charming riverside walk past the Oxo Tower and Gabriel's Wharf to the South Bank and the London Eye.
