Bermondsey is a riverside district of south London encompassing all of the historic sights and wonderful attractions between London Bridge and Tower Bridge. At the heart of the area is Bermondsey Village, centred on the newly regenerated Bermondsey Street. Formerly something of an urban wasteland, the thoroughfare has recently become one of London's funkiest communities full of fashionable bars, cafés and restaurants, boutiques, art galleries, design studios and fashion houses, with many people also living at their place of work. It's a friendly district, where long-established residents mix happily with the newer arrivals and where the inhabitants of the Jam Factory loft development have bonded through their own online "intranet" circle. The outrageous orange and pink building housing Zandra Rhodes' Fashion and Textile Museum - the only building in Europe designed by Mexican architect Ricardo Legoretta - sums up the lively, modern spirit of Bermondsey Village. However, the past is not forgotten. This is Britain's biggest antiques district, and a long-standing attraction, in the Square, is the weekly Bermondsey Antiques Market offering spreads of late Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian items, many collectable. In the great outdoors, Bermondsey Spa Gardens have recently been improved, and Tanner Street Park includes tennis courts.
