A tiny village of about 200 souls, Salthouse has Blakeney just a mile to the west, with Sherringham a few further east along the A149 coast road, but in spite of its size the village retains a shop and a proper village green pub, the Dun Cow. The old port that would have shipped the salt from the warehouse that gave Salthouse its name silted up in the seventeenth century, but there are relics of those days still around – in the church of St Nicholas (patron saint of fishermen) there are old graffiti of sailing ships carved into the choir stalls. The church hosts an annual visual arts show arranged by the North Norfolk Exhibition Project, for artists from or connected with the county, coinciding with the last two weeks of the school summer term and the first two of the holidays. A conservation village in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Salthouse lies between heathland to the rear and a wide pebble foreshore. The different terrains make the area a big draw for “twitchers”. In the heath Nightingales and Tree Pipets are to be heard; on the shore and marshland (owned by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust) Sandpipers, Little Stints, and Godwits are seen. The views from the heath can be breathtaking, repaying those tramping Peddars’ Way and the Norfolk Coast Path that both pass through Salthouse.
