The village of Halvergate, though only a couple of miles off the A47 Acle to Norwich road, sits on the edge of marshes that stretch eastwards to the horizon. At one time the village was a seaport on the giant estuary now long gone, though Braydon Water, the lake three miles distant formed by the Bure, the Yare and Waveney meeting to the west of Great Yarmouth, gives an idea of what once was. The bridge on the road from the Stracey Arms to the village affords a great vantage point to enjoy the view for those pressed for time, but it is far better to walk the area. The Weavers’ Way passes through Halvergate, and takes hikers to the Berney Arms on the shores of Braydon Water, accessible by train, boat and on foot but not by car. At the last census Halvergate had a population of 468, enough to keep the Red Lion pub busy. The church of St Peter and St Paul dominates the village, a looming late medieval structure with napped flint walls and an impressively high tower. Inside a now restored 14th century window of St Christopher is on display, a stunning find in this out-of-the-way corner of Norfolk. For centuries Halvergate was an island amidst bogs and marshes that were dangerous and difficult to cross. For a time this land was drained by the wind pumps visitors will see strewn across the landscape, unsettling the fragile wetland ecology, but in recent years some of that damage to the habitat has been reversed, and the marshes are now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, particularly attractive to bird-watchers. At sunset the marshes seen from the right spot can provide unexpected moments of breathtaking beauty as birds come in to settle for the night.
