Diss, a few miles from the Suffolk boarder, is a crossroads town, lying on the highway from Norwich to London (the A140), and the road between Thetford to Lowestoft. It is also on the main railway line between the county city and the capital, and prettily situated on the north bank of the river Waveney. Not surprisingly then it is a market town, and has been for centuries. As the centre of local agriculture it also houses what was the last working corn market in the country, opened in 1854 with suitably grandiose classical portico. The exchange now hosts concerts, seating up to 400 people. Diss is a conservation area with an air of organic growth, the architecture of many eras blending comfortably, the Victorian and Georgian sitting alongside the Tudor. There are narrow winding streets with secret little courtyards off them, and a market with a spectacular Tudor building looking on. Mere Street is the main shopping area, with some Suffolk-style pink-washing evident, and Fair Street (there was an annual fair from 1185 when a charter was granted to 1872 when bad behaviour forced its closure) has some fine 17th and 18th century domestic architecture. The most notable feature of Diss however is natural, the six acre mere, 60 feet deep in places, which has served as reservoir and drain in its time, but is now for the ducks and those wanting a quiet stroll. Less than three miles to the west through the fenland are found the beautiful gardens of Bressingham, with the attached steam museum where a Victorian roundabout and several narrow gauge railway rides can be enjoyed, and to the east along the A143 there is a US Air Force museum, testimony to the area’s significance during World War II.
