Wellingborough is a pleasant little town along the River Nene in East Northamptonshire, just one hour train ride away from London St Pancras. Wellingborough has one of the few town centres able to satisfy all needs with a modern shopping centre with plenty of free car parking just off the gorgeously medieval high street. The high street has a wonderful selection of shops selling anything from specialist teas and coffees to crystals plus plenty of good restaurants and pubs, both modern and traditional, and ancient buildings steeped in history and full of character. Two lovely pubs are the Horseshoe Inn - a traditional friendly pub offering quiz nights, live bands and acoustic and jamming sessions, and the Rising Sun pub, which offers traditional cask ales. Wellingborough’s annual Beer Festival is worth a visit for those who appreciate real ale, with many examples of Britain’s best beers, ciders and wines, held at The Castle, which is also the hub of Wellingborough’s entertainment all year round with a cinema and art gallery among other attractions. Most visitors get drawn to the impressive 17th century timber-framed Hind Hotel, made famous by a visit from Oliver Cromwell and now offering murder mystery evenings with a three course meal. A pathway beside this lovely example of medieval architecture leads to the tourist information centre inside the Tithe Barn, built in 1600AD and well restored to original condition since fire damage last century. Behind the Tithe Barn is the Jacobean Croyland Abbey, now converted into office space, and a nice little sculpture park in its grounds. There is plenty of open space too, with attractive riverside walking, lots of football fields at Gold Street plus not far out of town is Irchester Country Park with a café and disabled friendly pathways through woods and heathland. Wellingborough is definitely worth a visit.
