Rushden is a small town in East Northamptonshire about 4 miles from historic Wellingborough. Having only grown from village to a town around 120 years ago Rushden still seems like a large village possibly due to most residents spending their whole lives there working locally, which gives the place a homely feel despite being mostly industrial. Yellow sandstone Cotswold style, occasional thatched cottages and unique ‘gingerbread’ style houses nestle among red brick Victorian terraces all overlooked by the superbly crocketed spire of the 14th century St.Mary’s church. The high street has an ecclectic mix of specialist shops as well as chain stores, tea rooms and gorgeously elaborate buildings housing banks such as the one HSBC now uses, which used to be an old post office. Rushden started off as a mainly agricultural town and has remains of the ancient ‘open field system’ surrounding it, but grew large due to its lace making industry like most towns in the area though it was its footwear manufacturing industry which really put the town on the map. In the mid 20th century most of the town’s industry was boot and shoe making and though most of the factories are now closed, Rushden brings Northamptonshire’s ancient shoe making traditions to modern times with its large shoe factory outlets.
