Born 1905. Died 1974 - English novelist, playwright and short story writer.


His first play, The Last Bread, and his first novel, The Two Sisters, both appeared in 1926. He is regarded as one of the greatest exponents of the short-story form, The Modern Short Story being a classic. Other works include Fair Stood the Wind for France (1944), The Jacaranda Tree (1949), and The Darling Buds of May (1958) which became a huge success when televised in 1991-1993.
