Bowmore is a town and the capital of the Hebridean Island Islay, sitting off the west coast of Argyll in Scotland. Bowmore is situated at the north-east end of Loch Indaal. Islay is one of the largest Scottish Islands, well-known as being Capital of the Lord of the Isles from 12th-16th century details of which are found at the visitor centre in Finlaggan. The island owes its moderate climate to its position on the Gulf Stream the land is green and fertile, there are unspoilt sandy beaches, rocky coastlines, forests, rolling hills and home to over 100 different species of bird. Bowmore received its charter in 1614 although there were settlements in the area for centuries before, archaeological sites nearby include standing stones at Ballinaby and the Iron Age fort at Dun Nosebridge dating back to the Viking conquest 800AD-1156. The town is a popular tourist resort; there is a hotel and an award winning inn, charming white painted cottages and buildings, shops and cafes. The main attraction is the Bowmore Distillery dating from 1779; one of the oldest in Scotland producing traditionally made Bowmore Islay Single Malt Scotch Whiskey, one of the many famous ‘Islay Malts’, there is a visitor centre, guided tours and a shop. Bowmore is also home to an unusual Round Church which unusually has no corners.
