Wark on Tyne is a small village and civil parish usually called Wark in Northumberland, 12 miles north of Hexham and 5 miles south east of Bellingham. It is not to be confused with Wark on Tweed in the same county, within the borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed. It lies on the west bank of the River North Tyne. The name is derived from the Viking word for ‘earthworks’, and refers to the mound at the south of the village, where a meeting hall once stood. In the Middle Ages Wark was the head of the Lordship of Tynedale, and where Scottish Kings held court as it was part of Scotland. Pubs in the village include The Black Bull and The Grey Bull Inns on Front Street, as well as The Battlesteads Hotel. The hotel name 'battlesteads' is taken from the stables that once stood next to the meeting hall which was used as the main meeting place for the Scottish Clan Chieftains. The church of St Michael, which was built in the Gothic style and includes an embattled tower in the west end, was erected between 1814 and 1818. Some of the popular local attractions include Kielder Water, Kielder Forest and the numerous sites along the Roman Wall.
