In the district of Tynedale in Northumberland, thirty-one miles northwest of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, lies the small village of Otterburn on the banks of the river Rede near the confluence of the Otter Burn from which its name is derived. A cousin of William the Conqueror founded Otterburn Tower, a Northumbrian country house, in 1086. Only sixteen miles from the Scottish border, Otterburn played its part in the border raids, the most famous of which was a major battle, in 1388, between the English and Scots armies. According to the Scots the battle took place on August 5th although the English insist it was the 19th but whichever the date, both agree it was a victory for the Scots. Fought mostly by moonlight, the Scot leader James Douglas, making a move against Newcastle, was killed. English troops were led by Harry Hotspur, Sir Henry Percy son of the Earl of Northumberland, who was taken captive. Instead of waiting for re-inforcements from the Bishop of Durham, he went hastily into battle, which is the subject of two ballads, the Scot version entitled Otterburn and the English Chevy Chase. Otterburn today is a popular village with tourists and those interested in the history of the area as well as a commuter base for workers in Newcastle and Tyneside.
