Kirkwhelpington is a small village aet in the hilly countryside of mid-Northumberland in north east England, on the river Wansbeck, just off the A696 Newcastle to Scotland road between Ponteland and Otterburn. The surrounding area consists of moorlands, affording excellent pastureland for sheep and cattle, as well as rivers and small loughs or reservoirs stretching southwards. St.Bartholomew’s church was built in the thirteenth century, probably on the site of an earlier church and has been much altered over time. In the heart of the village is the Memorial Hall, built in 1924 as a memorial to the men of the area who gave their lives in the first World War, on land donated by the Duke of Northumberland and with money raised locally.The hall is used for wedding receptions and parties and also houses the post office, an art club and the British Legion. The township of Hawick was given to this parish in 1847, in exchange for the townships of Little Harle and West Harle, which were transferred to Kirk Harle parish. The nearby village of of Kirkhale is famous for being the birthplace of celebrated landscape gardener Capability Brown, commemorated nearby in a small museum and visitor centre. In 2005, on his retirement as Metroplitan Pole Commissioner, John Steven was made a life peer as Baron Stevens of Kirkwhelpington.
