Six miles north east of Alnwick, on the Northumberland coast, lies the little village of Craster on a whinstone ridge named Chaster Heugh, from which it is thought to have taken its name. The surrounding area is mainly whinstone beds, an indentation providing Craster with a natural harbour. Two areas of rocks known as Little Car and Muckle Car protect this harbour. The township was given to Albert Craster, founder of the Craster family, in the twelth century. Craster Tower was built as an imposing residence east of the village, in which his family continued to live for many centuries. Thomas Wood Craster built a small mission, which took his name, in the village in 1877 so that villagers would not need to travel to Embleton in order to go to church. It still belonged to the family in its centenary year when the Bishop of Newcastle dedicated it giving the church the name ‘St Peter the Fisherman’. The harbour was built in the nineteenth century for the herring fishery and is perhaps most famous for the curing sheds which produce the renowned Craster kippers. Always known as a fishing village, Craster is a small rural community enjoyed by local visitors and tourists alike.
