Barrasford is a village in Northumberland, nine miles north of Hexham, on the river North Tyne. Barrasford is noted for its quarry. It lies on a valuable seem of rock known as the Great Whinsill. This impressive outcrop of rock provides the foundation for much of Hadrians Wall, located several miles away. Hadrian's Wall, one of the most significant Roman monuments in Britain, was constructed in 122 AD and spans some 117 kilometres across the width of the country. Barrasford lies in the shadow of Haughton Castle which dates back to circa 14th century, when it was fortified. The castle is an impressive building that is still occupied. It is a popular film location but is not open to the public. Barrasford is near Chesters Fort and only a few miles from the Northumberland National Park, the northernmost national park in England, covering an area of more than 1030 km². Accommodation, meals and a public bar can be found at the Barrasford Arms Hotel. Barrasford’s Methodist Chapel has served the community since 1878. Other village amenities include the general store and a blacksmiths. Nearby Hexham has a vibrant shopping centre, the ‘County Gaol’ and Hexham Abbey. Other popular local attractions include Kielder Water, and Kielder Forest.
