At the mouth of the Coquet river in mid-Northumberland, on the North Sea coast, lies the town of Amble, nine miles south of Alnwick and a mile southeast of Warkworth. The town was built upon a peninsula, providing extensive views of the surrounding coastline. The name is thought to have derived from Annebelle, an Old English term meaning ‘Anna’s Promontory.’ Roman coins and ancient Briton foundations have been found in the area surrounding Amble, suggesting occupation at different times during its history. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, the ownership of Coquet Island, renowned for the quality of its sandstone and a popular retreat for St.Cuthbert, belonged to the Earl of Warwick and later passed to the Widdrington family who in turn, sold it to the Duke of Northumberland. Coquet island today is a popular RSPB reserve used by many native and visiting birds including terns and puffins. The town owed its prosperity and growth to the coalfields from which in the 19th century it used to ship coal to south England and the continent. As the industry declined however, so did the town but it has recently seen new development in the form of an award-winning marina on the site of the former staithes and is once more, a busy harbour town
