Approximately nine miles south west of Hexham lies the small market town of Allendale, which serves the Allendale valley. Part of the Hexham estate, it was sold to Sir William Blackett of Wallington, Northumberland, in 1689 by Sir John Fenwick. Sir William had become mayor of Newcastle and was created a baron in 1684, serving as an MP. On the death of his only son, also William, in 1728 the estate passed to his nephew, Walter Calverley, son of Sir William Calverley of Yorkshire, with the proviso that Walter marry William’s illegitimate daughter Elizabeth Ord and adopt the Blackett surname. With no surviving children, upon Walter’s death the estate passed to the Wentworth family and upon the death of Sir Thomas Wentworth, to his daughter Diana, wife of Colonel Richard Beaumont and on to her son Thomas Wentworth Blackett, with whose family the estate remains today. The Blackett family owned the mineral rights to almost all of the land so with the development of the leadmines, which produced one seventh of the country’s’ lead, it brought the family great wealth and an increased prosperity in the Allendale valley. The Allendale valley has a strong history of religious non-conformity, housing a Wesleyan Methodist chapel and a Primitive Methodist chapel which jointly were able to seat 500 people.
