The historic city of Cork is the second-largest in the Irish Republic - but it has a compact, friendly charm that's welcoming to visitors. Located on the south-west coast, Cork originated on an island in the River Lee, which crosses the city in two channels. Tributaries and streams flow here too, with the result that Cork is as famous for its bridges as for its hilly streets and lanes. The 18th Century hilltop church of St Anne's, Shandon, is a major landmark, with a steeple containing the celebrated eight bells that sightseers are invited to ring. Europe's Capital of Culture in 2005, it's packed with galleries, theatres and museums, and it has a busy festival programme for art, music, performance, film and literature. Popular attractions include the City Gaol and the Cork Vision Centre, which exhibits a scale model of the city. An attractive place with some beautiful parks and a bird sanctuary at the Lough, Cork also caters for sports fans in everything from sailing, fishing and scuba- diving to golf, riding and walking. And visitors should not leave without kissing the Blarney Stone at nearby Blarney Castle.
