The County Tyrone town of Strabane sits very close to the border with the Republic, the River Foyle on whose east banks it sits forming that border here. One of the rivers that feeds the larger Foyle, the Mourne, runs through the centre of the town. For tourists those rivers are major attractions, known for their game fishing quality. The Lifford Bridge in Strabane carries motor traffic across to Eire. Other tourist draws here include the Sperrin Hills to the east (the town’s golf course nestling at their feet) and two sites which are of interest to American travellers – the ancestral home of Woodrow Wilson to the south east of the place (though it was sadly damaged relatively recently) and the house in the town where printer John Dunlap learned his trade – he went on to print the Declaration of Independence to earn his place in history. During the Troubles the town suffered economically, but both before and after them it was capable of endearing whimsy: the great comic writer Brian O’Nolan (Flann O’Brien) was born in Strabane in 1911, his journalism as Myles na gCopaleen as madly engaging as Beachcomber; and the giant and dramatic metal sculptures on the outskirts of the town – officially a piece known as Let the Dance Begin – brought down to earth with the local nickname The Tinnies. The Alley Arts Centre which opened in 2007 in the town, a sign of changing times, hosts several festivals which draw visitors from all over Northern Ireland and beyond.
