Limavady sits on the southeast tip of Lough Foyle on the stunning Atlantic coast of County Derry / County Londonderry. Bordered by several designated areas of outstanding natural beauty, surrounding highlights include the Sperrin Mountains, and some spectacular beaches including Downhill Strand and Benone Strand offering miles of glorious golden sand backed by imposing cliffs. Sitting majestically on top of the cliffs is Mussenden Temple. Built in the 1770’s the temple ruins and gardens are now managed and maintained by the National Trust. On the outskirts of town in Magillgan is Martello Tower, a well-preserved prehistoric ring fort. Limavady town itself displays a pride in its heritage with a tradition of small independent shops and a wealth of craft and gift shops. Music seems to be in the blood of Limavady’s inhabitants, and for such a small town it hosts a wealth of events including the Limavady Jazz and Blues Festival, the Roe Valley Folk Festival, and the Danny Boy Festival. Danny Boy was penned mid 19th century, by local inhabitant Jane Ross. Inspired by a blind fiddler outside her window in Main Street, she wrote down the melody known today as the ‘Londonderry Air’. A sculptural tribute to Jane Ross sits imposingly at the bottom of Catherine Street.
