Coleraine bills itself as the “Capital of the Causeway Coast”, and indeed it provides a great base for exploring this stunning region of Northern Ireland. With World Heritage Sites such as The Giant’s Causeway, the immensely entertaining if slightly daunting attraction of Carick-a-Rede rope bridge, blue fag beaches, world-class golf courses and enough hills and valleys to keep the most intrepid fell-walker happy, the Causeway Coast does have an incredible amount to offer. Coleraine itself is a very pleasant town with attractions of its own, and should not be overlooked. Sitting on the River Bann in County Derry / Londonderry it is a salubrious, smart town with a relatively young population. The Heritage Walking Trail around the 17th Century Ramparts provides a good introduction to the town, taking you past the impressive St Patrick’s Church that dates back to 1613. The University of Ulster is based here in striking headquarters from the 1960s. The Riverside Theatre run by the University hosts impressive productions throughout the year. Just outside of town and surrounded by beautiful forest and river walks is Mountsandel Fort that contains the remains of the earliest known hunter-gatherers settlement in Ireland. The relics date back to 7000 BC. With a marina, a vibrant shopping scene, a host of leisure activities and excellent transport links to both Belfast and Derry, Coleraine offers plenty to the visitors of the North Coast.
