The village of Ballykelly sits on the A2 road between Londonderry and Limavady, in the midst of forested country with plenty of trails that are rather safer these days than they were a couple of centuries ago when they were frequented by highwaymen. Ballykelly was a 17th century plantation settlement, in its case sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers taking advantage of its easy access to the seafood riches of Lough Foyle – access made even simpler with the construction of a canal to the waters there. It has further developed since WWII, and there are now nearing 2000 inhabitants. City of Derry Airport is just a short drive west from the village, something that recently confused a pilot who landed at the army base – formerly an RAF aerodrome – by mistake. Early 19th century architect Richard Suter was responsible for several notable buildings in the village, the most strikingly elegant being his 1827 Presbyterian Church; he may also have designed its pleasing manse. Rather older is Sampson’s Tower, part monument part refuge. There are some fine gentleman’s residences to be seen too, one of them now a large country house hotel.
