Carrickfergus, the oldest town in County Antrim, is located on the northern shore of Belfast Lough and dominated by a magnificent 12th Century castle. Built by John de Courcy, this is one of Ireland's best-preserved Norman fortresses, and visitors are invited inside to soak up centuries of history and meet the resident life-size models of noblemen and guards. Carrickfergus wears its past proudly. St Nicholas's Church dates back to 1182, and local artefacts from as far back as the Medieval era are on display at Carrickfergus Museum. Part of the 17th century town walls can still be seen. Also here is Ireland's only surviving coal gasworks, now restored and open to the public. Yet another attraction is a thatched cottage dedicated to US president Andrew Jackson, whose parents left Carrickfergus for America two years before his birth. The cottage, with 18th Century furnishings, is adjoined by a small museum commemorating the US Rangers. Back in the real world, the up-to-date Carrickfergus Marina bears testament to the town's importance as a sailing centre. There are great golfing and fishing opportunities, and some lovely parks, gardens and scenic walks to explore. The Timeless Trail guides walkers round the essential sights of Carrickfergus.
