Carnlough is a small bayside village that enjoys some of the most inspirational scenery in Ireland. It's situated at the foot of Glencloy - the second of the beautiful nine Glens of Antrim - on the Antrim Coast Road, itself sensationally scenic. Carnlough's main claim to fame, apart from its stunning location, is the Londonderry Arms Hotel, a Georgian house once owned by Sir Winston Churchill. The hotel is part of a conservation area that includes a picturesque 18th Century harbour (now renovated and used by pleasure craft, yachts and fishing boats), a railway bridge and a former town hall, all built from local white limestone. Carnlough is a wonderfully restful village, although visitors looking for an active break will find plenty to do, from fishing and sailing to windsurfing, swimming and hiking: the glen features fairytale waterfalls and wild flowers, the local nature reserve contains Cranny Waterfalls and Gortin Glen Quarry, and Garron Tower stands high atop Garron Point. History-lovers will enjoy the two Norman mottes, a couple of miles outside the village. Glenarm Forest is a short distance south of Carnlough, while Glenariff - "Queen Of The Glens", with its forest park and magnificent waterfall - lies to the north.
