The Antrim town of Ballyclare has seen its share of invaders and incomers throughout the centuries, from Viking raiders through Norman conquerors (who left their mark in the form of mottes still to be seen thereabouts) to the Scots who arrived during the Plantation. These days those searching out the settlement are likely to be tourists, including travellers who arrive at nearby Larne on ferries from England and Scotland, and some who come from further afield tracing ancestors who emigrated from the town to America and Australia – the families of Mark Twain and Sam Houston among them so it’s said. For tourists and commuters to Belfast alike Ballyclare offers a relaxed country setting ringed by forests and woodlands but only a short journey away from Northern Ireland’s capital. With a population just under the 9,000 mark it enjoys the amenities of a town on its broad main street, but none of the crush. Ballyclare has its own attractions too, architecturally in the form of the now unused 19th century market house, and culturally in its famous May Fair which dates back to the time of George II, one of the last horse fairs to survive in Britain and Ireland though these days its entertainment goes well beyond the equine. For those of a sporting bent there are several golf-courses within a matter of miles, and of course there’s the traditional welcome in the hostelries.
