Stromness is an ancient town on the west coast of mainland Orkney in Scotland situated at an inlet of Scapa Flow along the Hamnavoe shore. The burgh of Stromness has the major ferry port on Orkney which is frequently visited by ferries from Scrabster on mainland Scotland and passing cruise ships. Once inhabited by Picts and Vikings, Stromness grew in 1670 when the Hudson Bay Company chose the harbour as the last port for their ships heading to Canada. The town is also well-known as the home of author George Mackay Brown (1929-96). With the picturesque shoreline to the front and the hillside of Brinkles Brae at the rear, Stromness is a popular tourist resort and an ideal base for touring the Orkneys, there are hotels, inns, holiday homes, hostels and a Camping and Caravan Park, a variety of shops and plenty places to eat out. The museum was founded in 1837 and has natural history collections, details of the whaling industry and mementos of the German Fleet scuttled in Scapa Flow in 1919. Historically interesting features include St Mary’s Church established in 1885 and Stromness House, a landmark building with architectural excellence which currently houses The Pier Arts Centre. Historical guided tours are available to visit ancient tombs and burial sites and boat-cruises are available from the marina in the harbour to explore the islands.
