The fertile plains of the Vale of Evesham has been home to Neolithic, Celt, Roman, Saxon and English peoples all attracted by the rich soil that is ideal for growing all manner of flowers, fruit and vegetables. The market town of Evesham - it had been granted the rights to run a market in 1055 - is lies in a loop of the River Avon and about 14 miles from Worcester, Stratford-upon-Avon and Cheltenham. The town can trace its beginnings to a swineherd called Eoves (sometimes called Eof) who, whilst searching for a pig, saw a vision of the Virgin Mary he reported the sighting to Ecgwin, the bishop of Worcester the bishop came to the spot and also saw the vision. Ecgwin founded an Abbey on the site in 709 becoming its first Abbot. The area became known as Eoveshomme or Eovesham (then Evesham). By the time of its dissolution (1540) by Henry VIII was said to the third largest and most powerful in the country. The majority of the monastic buildings were demolished and the stone sold off as building material except for the parish church of All Saints and the Clock Tower which was built by Abbot Lichfield in the 16th century; the site has been turned into Abbey Park. The Battle of Evesham was fought just north of the town on the 4th August 1265 where Simon de Montfont was defeated by Edward, King Henry III`s son (later to become King Edward I), de Montfont`s body was dismembered and parts distributed around the country as a warning against rebellion. What was left of his body was taken by the monks and buried in front of the High Alter in the Abbey church. A stone in the Park marks the spot where the burial took place. There many fine buildings in Evesham, in the high street is a late 17th century town house called "Dresden House " home Dr Baylies the physician to Frederick the Great of Prussia; a 15th century timbered merchants house, the Round House, now home to a Bank! And the Almonry; dating back to 1400 it was the home of the Almoner who was responsible for attending to the poor and needy and also for providing hospitality to visitors to the Abbey. It now houses the Heritage Centre and the Tourist Information Centre. The Community Hospital stands on the grounds of the 1837 Evesham Workhouse all but the Chapel (now a pharmacy) and old Infirmary building remain. Evesham is home to many annual events including a fishing contest, a hot-air balloon festival, a regatta and a river festival which features illuminated boats. The town`s Hampton ferry is the last hand pulled ferry in the country. Despite the decline in Agriculture since the 1970`s the Vale of Evesham is still one of the most productive areas in the country. It is also one of the most picturesque especially in the spring when the blossom is on the trees and with the Cotswolds and Bredon Hill near by many fine walks are to be found.
