Born 1937 - Zlin, Czechoslavakia - British dramatist.

Worked as freelance journalist and theatre critic in London. Became well known with his play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (premiered 1966). Other plays include Jumpers (1972), The Real Inspector Hound (1968) and The Invention of Love (1997). Also written a novel, short stories, screenplays and film scripts. Shared Academy award for Shakespeare in Love (1998). Knighted in 1997.
