County towns: Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon, Rugby, Leamington Spa

Set in the very heart of the country, Warwickshire encapsulates for many the true essence of England. Steeped in English History and Culture, it is also renowned for its beautiful countryside and villages.

Warwickshire is situated in the West Midlands region of England at the heart of the country. This makes it easily accessible and provides direct access to all other parts of England, as well as Wales and Scotland. The largest town in the county is Nuneaton , although the county town is Warwick itself. Warwickshire has no cities, although this has only been the case since 1974 when Birmingham and Coventry were taken away from Warwickshire and incorporated into the West Midlands metropolitan county. The rich history of Warwickshire includes many of the most famous names in the History of England. One man, however, has put this county firmly on the map more than any other. He was, of course, the most famous of all English writers, William Shakespeare . Warwickshire encompasses Shakespeare Country , making it a must for tourists from all over the world who flock to visit the birthplace of the famous bard. Stratford-upon-Avon is a beautiful English town, which possesses all the charm that one associates with a typical 'Olde English' market town. It features many beautiful original Tudor timber-framed houses and for these alone the town would be worth a visit, even if the famous Bard himself hadn't been born there! Naturally there are a large number of theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon , many of which are dedicated to showing Shakespeare's classic works. Warwickshire is also famous for its integral part in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Coughton Court near Alcester has been the home of the Throckmortons since 1409. Several family members were closely involved in the plot. The Throckmortons being a staunch catholic family who continued to have a hand in the process of Catholic emancipation for many centuries after. The village of Dunchurch is home to 'Guy Fawkes House', formerly The Red Lion Inn, where the plotters stayed whilst awaiting news of Guy Fawkes anticipated success. After the failure of the plot there was much action throughout Warwickshire relating to the chase and arrest of the plotters. The town of Rugby is famous for an event that reputedly took place at Rugby School. In 1823, whilst playing Football at the school, William Webb Ellis is reputed to have disregarded the rules of the time and run with the ball in his arms, thus inventing the game of rugby. It is not certain if this event ever took place, however, as it was first written about after the death of Webb Ellis by someone who had never met him. It is also very likely that with so many variations of the game being played in the centuries prior to the formalisation of rules for the different codes of Football , that many people had played a variation that included running with the ball prior to this time. Whatever the truth, the town has been immortalised by the adoption of its name for the sport of rugby football. The town of Nuneaton draws its name from its 12th century origins as a Benedictine Nunnery. This market town is the largest town in Warwickshire and is noted for its associations with 19th century author George Eliot , who was born just outside Nuneaton. The town has recently benefited from the building of a major new shopping centre, the Ropewalk Shopping Centre. The county town is Warwick, which offers plenty for the potential visitor. The town centre is full of magnificent Tudor buildings, providing for a very picturesque aspect. Many events such as festivals of the Spoken Word, Folk Music, Classical and Contemporary Music are held annually in Warwick. Warwick castle is also a big draw for visitors to the area. J R R Tolkein was married in Warwick and his works are believed to have been influenced by the town and its Mercian origins. Warwick also has its own racecourse for fans of the horse racing . Kenilworth Castle is also a big tourist attraction. The first potato ever grown in this country, brought back from South America by Sir Walter Raleigh , was thought to have been planted near the castle in the Little Virginia area of the town.
