Lampeter is an ancient market town set within the Teifi Valley in Ceredigion, south west Wales. It's fascinating history turns back the hands of time many centuries with standing stones, burial chambers and even a Roman road nearby. The rich and pleasing countryside bestows fabulous views that entice walkers, whilst those who enjoy the challenge of fishing can hope for the best on the banks of the Teifi river. The town was granted it's first market charter in the 13th Century and grew in size and importance becoming a Droving Centre in the 18th Century, today the tradition carries on with colourful market stalls, annual festivals and celebrations that please the senses. The Roman's mined for gold close by and the story is expertly told during a visit to this ancient site. Lampeter is renowned for being the home of the oldest university in Wales, part of which stands on the site of a castle destroyed by Owain Gwynedd in 1137, pleasing architecture is easy on the eye with elegant houses and an old coaching inn, there's delightful shops, restaurants, and a memorable theatre ensuring the choosiest of visitors will be happy in this pocket of Wales where the welsh word still passes the patriot's lips.
