With a population of just 2,280 at the last census Kirkbymoorside seems more like a large village than a town, but it has a market place with a toll house, and a ruined castle still to be seen to the north of the place to mark it out from smaller settlements. Indeed, there have been two castles here in the town’s history. Kirkbymoorside means place with a church by the moor, and is of Norse origin. The church in question is All Saints, a predominantly late medieval building but with remnants of earlier structures incorporated in it. The town is easy to access, sitting as it does on the A170 road between Thirsk and Scarborough, and offers a good base for exploring the North York Moors National Park just a mile or so north. Three miles away the sizeable Ryedale Folk Museum can be found in Hutton-le-Hole, its complex of buildings giving an insight into crafts and trades from past times. The little river Dove-in-Farndale, a tributary of the Rye, passes the eastern edge of the town, and offers some trout fishing. Those not wanting to rely on their catch for subsistence have a range of restaurants and pubs available in Kirkbymoorside. There are two particular claims to fame for the settlement. The first is it was where the 2nd Duke of Buckingham died in rather mysterious circumstances as perhaps fitted this politician and playwright’s life of debauchery, murder and excess. The second is its celebrated brass band, one of the best in the country, formed about 200 years ago. You may catch them at the Ryedale show, North Yorkshire’s biggest such event, held in the summer at Welburn Park south of Kirkbymoorside.
