Originally consisting of a farm and a few cottages, local businessmen in 1860 developed the area in northeast Kent beside St Mildred’s Bay and West Bay as a seaside resort for the middle classes. Its two sandy beaches remain popular today. Sea walls and groynes were built around both bays to provide protection for both beaches and town from coastal flooding. A Royal Naval Air Service seaplane base was located here during World War I in order to protect the Thames Estuary and its coastal towns. After the war, the base was de-commissioned and it’s replacement at Marston eventually became Kent International Airport. The town of Westgate is located on the Isle of Thanet, which, until around two hundred years ago, was a separate island from the mainland, which became exposed above sea level when the English Channel broke through between the Kent and French coast causing the sea level to fall. Due to silting of the channel in between, is no longer so and the chalk deposited when the area was below the sea has resulted in the area being designated as an Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The patron saint of Thanet was Mildreth, after whom St Mildred’s Bay was named.
