Cliftonville is a coastal town near the bigger resort of Margate in Kent. It also contains the area known as Palm Bay. The original Palm Bay estate was built in the 1930s as a number of large, wide avenues with detached and semi-detached houses. These avenues include Gloucester Avenue and Leicester Avenue and they still remain the most prestigious roads in Cliftonville. The main shopping street is Northdown Road with several banks and two Post Offices. There is a small supermarket, a petrol station and several pubs and churches along the two mile length of Northdown Road, as well as some smaller shops and cafes. Northdown House, a seminar and wedding venue, is situated in the grounds of Northdown Park. Cliftonville has an indoor bowling rink, tennis courts, a crazy golf course, and a pitch and putt course. The Winter Gardens on Fort Crescent date back to 1911 and are a fine example of Edwardian Architecture. The building hosts regular music events. During the first half of the 20th Century Cliftonville was considered the fashionable hotel quarter of Margate and T.S.Eliot spent a period of convalescence at The Albermarle Hotel where he wrote significant sections of The Waste Land whilst living in the town.
