Bacton just about qualifies as a North Norfolk village, though it is a world away from the Chelsea-by-the-sea style place further west along the North Sea coast, and is none the worse for that. Having kept its soul and its population where other grander settlements are now weekend retreats for bankers from Kensington, Bacton is quiet and unpretentious, with a brilliant beach into the bargain. There are some lovely cottages dotted about the village, whose population at the last census was 1,130, but not enough to merit being bought up by the smart set. Some of the prettiest cottages ring the church, St Andrew’s, set out to the west of the settlement in the fields. St Andrew’s is an interesting church, the main body of the 15th-century building small and neat, with great big tower attached to it, rather out of scale. Within the village there are a few remains of Bromholm Priory, a Cluniac establishment that was once a great place of pilgrimage, famed for having a large piece of the true cross. Now the village houses the terminal for the Interconnector gas pipeline which is the most notable structure in the village, built at the northern end of the place. Bacton is a down-to-earth holiday resort, with caravans and other accommodation available, and it has a tremendous beach, stretching southwards to the adjacent village of Walcott (really they run together) where possibly the best plaice and chips in the world is served. There is no shortage of good pubs too. The beach, somewhat rarely for Norfolk, has the occasional ammonite fossil to delight children and adults alike, and those who know what they are looking for can sometimes find amber and even agates, though for kids the sea-glass and pebbles are just as much fun.
