Ayot St Lawrence

Shaw’s Corner, Ayot St Lawrence - It is magical to watch Shaw’s plays in the garden of the house he lived in for over 40 years! Highly recommend it. A couple of evening performances are held each summer. Take a picnic too! - Cathryn

Hatfield

Walk – Brocket Hall. If you drive along the B653 from Stanborough to Wheathampstead, there’s a lay-by on the right just past the Crocked Chimney pub. From here is access to a public footpath across the Brocket Hall estate. The walk goes through woodland & over the preened grounds of the house & golf course. Fantastic views over the parkland & the stunning house but watch out for flying golf balls & be courteous to golfers who pay lots to play there! Cathy ….. local dog-walker

Potters Bar

There are some very brave inhabitants of Oakmere Park in Potters Bar – squirrels! They will sit & watch (from a sometimes unnerving distance) your every mouthful, especially of their favourite snack – chips with ketchup! I didn’t believe it either …. Till I had company every work lunchtime in the park! - Cathryn

St Albans

This is best done mid-week in the cooler months, as summer weekends are crowded & parking an impossibility! Near the cathedral in this Roman city is Verulamium Park. Go under an arch way that looks private but isn’t at the bottom of George St & there’s quite a bit of parking on the left, perfectly located for walking round the beautiful park with it’s lake & stream & then a pint in Ye Olde Fighting Cocks traditional, but octagonal, pub with large beer garden. Cathryn …. Pub connoisseur

Stevenage

many restaurants of all styles to choose from but, if you fancy Indian, can recommend The Maharajah in the Old Town. Decent pricing, excellent service & a great menu! Have outside dining in summer. No need to book in advance generally it seems, unless your party is larger than 6! Cathryn …..local resident

Fairlands Valley Park. Home to black squirrels, many Canada geese, whooping swans, dragonflies & much more! An oasis in this bustling town. There are fantastic walks, 3 lakes, a sailing club, fishing & a lot of open grassland available to all. Go under the underpass & there is a massive open green area (about ¾ mile square), incorporating the Millennium Wood. Dog walking here is wonderful. If you’re coming by car – there’s a big, free car park off Shephall View, signposted to the Scout Hut, over-looking the park, right-by the nature lake. - Elias
