London Welsh Rugby Football Club was originally founded in 1885, following the success of London Scottish. The club was set up (like London Scottish) to give young Welsh men, who found themselves working or studying in London, a sporting club that offered a taste of home. In 1890 the club set up an Association Football team, but this disbanded after a few seasons.

The club has an astounding history when it comes to international honours for its players. It has provided 177 players for the Welsh international side and 43 players for the British and Irish Lions.

With the advent of the professional era, London Welsh has resisted the temptation to distance its first XV from the rest of the club as many have. Instead the club retains its traditional atmosphere and social ethos from the amateur days. Since the formation of the league structure in England, London Welsh has been a part of the English League. However, plans to 'ring fence' the Premier division, preventing promotion and relegation, have caused London Welsh to apply to the Magners League. It is the clubs intent to act as an additional Welsh Region in the Magners League.
