St Helens Rugby League Football Club has a long and proud history that stretches back to the club's formation in 1873. St Helens moved to its current home at Knowsley Road in 1890. They defeated the Manchester Rangers in their debut match there. Knowsley Road currently holds 17,500 supporters. The club was one of the 22 original breakaway members who formed the Northern Rugby Union in 1895, leading to the creation of the code known as Rugby League. St Helens contested the first ever Challenge Cup final in 1897, losing 10-3 to Batley. The club had to wait until 1956 to finally win the Challenge Cup but has more than made up since having won the trophy on eleven occasions, with four of those coming since the turn of the millennium. League success has also been plentiful for St Helens, the first Championship coming in the 1931-32 season. Since then, including Super League wins, the team has claimed 12 league titles and are the most successful team in the modern summer era of the game. In both 2001 and 2007 St Helens overcame the Brisbane Broncos (the Australasian National Rugby League champions) to claim the World Club Challenge title.
