Attraction in Taunton
The West Somerset Railway is Britain’s longest “Heritage” Railway running from Bishops Lydeard to the coast at Minehead. There are nine restored stations en route serving a variety of destinations. The railway runs special themed trains throughout the year and large-scale events including Steam Rallies, and team Fayre and Vintage Vehicle rally.
As the longest Heritage Railway in the country it runs from Bishops Lydeard near Taunton to the seaside at Minehead, some 20 miles of glorious countryside and coastline. The unique smells of a steam hauled train takes passengers back to the golden age of steam travel as the train passes through the Quantock Hills before running along the West Somerset coast giving views of Dunster castle on the way.
At Minehead, visitors may view the recently installed turntable and may be able to watch it in operation.
Your party may join at any of the lovingly restored and maintained stations although coach access is easiest at Bishops Lydeard, Watchet or Minehead. Parties of 16 or more receive generous concessions especially on Mondays and Fridays.
