The Seniors chain of fish and chip shops, owned and managed by the Horabin family, has taken the idea of the fish and chip café into the new millennium, particularly so at the Thornton restaurant which they purpose built and opened in 2006. The two-storey building is immaculately clean, something that Alastair Horabin who manages all three shops says was built into the design from the outset. The furniture is modern and stylish while still comfy and in keeping with a family restaurant. Alastair’s father was a fish merchant for some 33 years, and the family knowledge of fish is evident in the menu. Not just the usual suspects of cod, haddock and plaice feature here. Their specialty is John Dory and chips, and according to availability they sell monkfish, wahu-wahu, butterfish, witches, lemon sole... With reasonably priced wine nicely kept, or a cup of tea if you prefer – and they won’t turn their nose up at you – this place has incorporated the best of traditional chippies (including good locally sourced spuds) with a modern outlook. And all the fish is sustainably sourced, much bought daily at Fleetwood market, though cod will come from Icelandic suppliers as they are conserving their stocks while our own dwindle.
