Darbucka bar and bistro in Clerkenwell has a fabulously split personality. The upstairs Gallery Bistro serves modern European food in a light, bright and contemporary space featuring art from around the world. But downstairs in the World Music Bar, the lighting becomes shadowy, the food Lebanese and the culture aural, with live world music that will pull you up out of your soft, low seating and get you dancing – or even belly-dancing. Down here, you'd be forgiven for thinking you've wandered into a luxurious Bedouin tent: the walls are lined with red fabrics, colourful drapes shimmer in the glow of the lamps, and shisha pipes complete the Eastern feel. So, back to the food: upstairs you might have chicken Caesar salad followed by lamb kofta or lemon linguine, while downstairs you can mix and match from a good range of meze, washed down with a zingy cocktail or a smooth mint tea. If you can't decide if you're feeling elegantly European or exotically Eastern, just get the best of both worlds by eating upstairs and reserving a table in the bar below for later.
