Smithfield meat market is an unlikely place to chance upon an authentic seafood restaurant, but tucked away in an alley behind bustling Cowcross Street is an unassuming gem called Rudland & Stubbs. Established some 26 years ago in an old sausage factory, it retains many classic original features - tiled walls and columns, dark wood floors, marble-topped tables – and with them a nice, oldy-worldy atmosphere. Grab a stool at the bar and dine on oysters and champagne, or indulge in a lavish three course meal: warm Arbroath smokies to start, perhaps, then butter fish with a mushroom risotto. Crème brulee and lemon tart are amongst some terrific desserts. Small al fresco dining area during the summer.
