Dickens Restaurant is in Townsford Mill, which straddles the River Colne in the centre of Halstead, Essex. Open from 10am most days, it's a great stop-off for breakfast or afternoon tea but the main menu is just as tempting. For starters, persuade someone to join you in the Asian Platter for two and tuck into shaomai, cocktail spring rolls, wonton, prawn and vegetable samosa, king prawn tempura and Thai salad with a sweet chilli sauce for dipping. If no one will play ball, you'll be more than content with the Terrine du Café – chicken and pork liver pate with a fruity house chutney and fresh French bread. For mains, choose from thin-crust pizzas, excellent burgers and classic sandwiches, or accomplished versions of favourites like shepherd's pie, fish and chips or sausage and mash. Salads are fresh and filling and you can finish with a classic tiramisu or a 1960s knickerbocker glory.
