Bristol conjures up some Middle Eastern magic at Sands, a spacious, softly-lit Lebanese restaurant on Queen's Road. Inside it's all creamy walls, cosy alcoves and glowing lanterns: outside, you can make the most of summer evenings in the large garden which seats around 100 people. The atmosphere is romantic, the service smiling and capable. Start with lemony hummus, grilled halloumi or spicy Armenian sausages – or, if you can't decide, just order the generous mezze selection. Follow with kafta (minced lamb, onions and parsley grilled on skewers and served with grilled onions, tomatoes and green peppers). Vegetarians are definitely not poor relations at Sands: try Sheikh El Mahshi, aubergine with onions, garlic and green peppers in tomato sauce, served with rice. Round off with a saffron, pistachio and rosewater ice-cream that's straight out of Arabian Nights.
