Kinnersley Castle was one of the many Marches castles sited by the Normans
along the Welsh border. Predominantly a remodelled Elizabethan Manor House
featuring fine oak panelled rooms and an original 1588 plasterwork ceiling.
Previous residents include:- Richard de la Bere , father of 21 children, who
won his spurs at the Battle of Crecy ; The Vaughan family , legends about
whose ancester ³Black Vaughan² and the phantom black dog are widely
recounted; Sir Thomas Morgan, Baronet and Govenor of Jersey ; The Reaveley
family, whose daughter married George Frederick Bodley, the Arts and Crafts
architect and designer; Major Davey, inventor of the Davy Fire Escape, whose
daughter Doreen landed the biggest rod-killed Wye salmon; and Lord Brocket
for a short period during WWII.
8 acres of grounds contain some remarkable yew hedges, a walled kitchen
garden and one of the biggest Ginkgo Biloba trees in the country. Next to
the Castle stands the Norman Church with unusual C.13th tower & wall
paintings by Bodley.
