In the 19th century, an eccentric philanthropist, Joseph Williamson employed thousands of local men to create a network of tunnels underneath the Edge Hill area of Liverpool. There are no known maps and many tunnels remain hidden. Some of the tunnels have been excavated and can be visited on a 45 minute guided tour at the Heritage Centre.
