Built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594, Sherborne Castle has been the home of the Digby family since 1617. Prince William of Orange was entertained here in 1688, and George III visited in 1789. Splendid collections of art, furniture and porcelain are on view in the Castle. Lancelot ‘Capability Brown’ created the lake in 1753 and gave Sherborne the very latest in landscape gardening. The 30-acres of lakeside gardens and rolling landscape make this a wonderful place to explore and to see a variety of wildlife on the 50-acre lake.
Visitors will see Great State Rooms, the Solarium, Library and other fascinating rooms all with magnificent views of the gardens and lake and enjoy the tranquil, unspoilt and unique character of Sherborne Castle. Tudor, Jacobean and Georgian, all the great periods of English history are here.
The gardens, landscaped by 'Capability Brown', extend over 30 acres around a 50 acre lake, bordered on the Castle side by the Adam-style Orangery, the Tea Garden and lawns. Across the lake the ground rises to reveal the spectacular ruins of the great battlements of Sherborne's first Castle built by the Normans in the 12th century.
