The Courtauld Institute Gallery has one of the most important collections in Britain, including world-famous Old Master and Impressionist and Post Impressionist paintings, together with sculpture and applied arts.
Its special atmosphere reflects it origins in a series of remarkable gifts and bequests, by some of the leading collectors of the twentieth century, including especially Samuel Courtauld, Roger Fry, Lord Lee and Count Seilern.
The new 20th century displays on the second floor transform the gallery's spaces with the display of a series of exceptional loans of over 100 late 19th and 20th century paintings and sculptures. These include an outstanding group of Fauve paintings, with work by Matisse, Derain, Dufy and Vlaminck, as well as a remarkable selection of paintings and drawings by Kandinsky. The sculpture includes pieces by Degas, Maillol, Matisse, Laurens, Archipenko, Hepworth and Moore.
“Wonderful, thrilling paintings…the dazzling loan…is an extraordinary thing to happen to any gallery…It transforms not only the Courtauld, but the whole look of art in London”
Philip Hensher, Mail on Sunday
