For one of the genuinely very best views of the Thames, St Paul's opposite, Canary Wharf to the east, book a table at the simple white-washed restaurant alongside the Globe Theatre where the menu is an appealing roll call of seasonal English cooking. It changes weekly, but to give you a taster, a starter might be a terrine of duck confit with a gooseberry relish, leisurely followed by baked whiting fillet nestling beneath a lemon and basil crust, and accompanied by colcannon cake and truffle butter sauce. Two courses with coffee is good value at under £20. Service is never rushed, allowing you plenty of time to idly watch the passing boats and ebbing of the tide.
