The Serpentine Gallery, situated in the heart of Kensington Gardens in a 1934 tea pavillion, was founded in 1970 by the Arts Council of Great Britain. Attracting over 400,000 visitors a year, it is one of London's most loved galleries for modern and contemporary art.
The Serpentine Gallery receives a third of its funding from London Arts with an additional grant from Westminster City Council. The remaining two thirds of its income is raised through corporate sponsorship, as well as the support of individuals and charitable organisations.
The Serpentine Gallery reopened in February 1988 following a £4 million renovation funded by the National Lottery, through the Arts Council of England, as well as a number of other generous donations. As part of the renovation, the Royal Parks collaborated with the Gallery to commission a permanent work in its grounds by the Scottish poet and artist Ian Hamilton Finlay. The work comprises 8 benches, a tree plaque and a circular floor piece at the Gallery's entrance.
