La Hongue Bie is an impressive example of a prehistoric site dating back to Neolithic times. Situated in rural Grouville, on the borders with the Parish of St Saviour, the oldest part of the site, the passage-grave covered by a 12-metre high mound, was built by Jersey's first farming community as a sacred place and burial chamber. It has dominated the area for some 6,000 years. Two medieval chapels top the mound. La Hougue Bie houses Jersey's archaeology and geology galleries and an underground German bunker, converted into a memorial to the slave workers who died working on Hitler's Atlantic Wall during the Second World War. As part of the Living History programme there are regular guided tours, demonstrations and talks.
